The major scale on guitar: the yardstick for everything else

If you picked the minor pentatonic because it sounds like music sooner, you were right. It just leaves one question unanswered: why those five notes and not five others. The answer is in the major scale. It is the yardstick everything in music theory is measured against. Every interval, every chord type and every other scale is described as a departure from it, and if you skip it you learn each of those terms a second time later on.
This article covers it from both ends. First as a shape: C major in three positions with fret numbers and fingering, the whole neck, and moving it into other keys. Then as a frame of reference: which chords come out of the seven degrees, and why three of them carry most of popular music.
How a major scale is built
A major scale has seven notes, and what makes it major is not the notes themselves but the distances between them. The step pattern is whole, whole, half, whole, whole, whole, half. On a guitar a half step is exactly one fret and a whole step is two, so in frets that is 2-2-1-2-2-2-1.

The two half steps are the character of the scale. The first sits between the third and fourth degrees, between E and F. The second sits at the end, between B and C, and that one matters more. A note only a half step below the root pulls audibly towards it. Hence the name leading tone for the seventh degree, and hence a major scale sounding resolved rather than merely finished. Play it up to the B and stop there. The missing last note is in your ear as an expectation.
For the hand that has one direct consequence. Where a half step falls, two notes sit in neighbouring frets, and that is exactly where three notes fit on one string instead of two. If you notice that some strings in the shapes below carry three dots and others two, this is why.
Why C major
C major is the one major key with no accidentals. C, D, E, F, G, A, B, and not one of them is a sharp or a flat. On a piano those are the white keys, in notation an empty key signature, and in your head a scale you can spell without thinking about enharmonics.
The second reason is in the scales overview: C major and A minor are built from the same seven notes. Everything you learn here is at the same time the material for the minor scale. On guitar there is also the fact that the key changes nothing about the fingering. The shapes move, and C major is simply the place where they are easiest to name.
Position 1: frets 2 to 5
The root C sits on the A string at the third fret and a second one on the G string at the fifth. The hand covers four frets and gets one finger per fret: index on the second, middle on the third, ring on the fourth, little finger on the fifth. No shifting, no stretching.
Three notes fall on the A, D and G strings and two on the rest. The A string carries B, C and D, so the leading tone, the root and the second degree one after another, two of them in neighbouring frets. Between B and C sits the half step, here for once as a grip.
This is the only one of the three positions with no root on either E string. For moving it into other keys the A string is therefore the reference, which is what the table further down is built on.
Position 2: frets 5 to 8
The reference point has moved here. The roots sit on the low and high E strings at the eighth fret, and the G string carries a third at the fifth. Because both E strings are tuned the same way, the picture is identical at the top and the bottom, which makes this position easy to remember.
What is worth noticing is the join to the previous one. Position 1 ends on the fifth fret on all six strings, and that is exactly where position 2 begins. The two do not share individual notes but a whole column of frets. Play position 1 upwards, stop at the fifth fret and carry on from there into position 2, and you have made the change without playing a single note twice.
The B string is the odd one out in this position: it carries notes at the fifth, sixth and eighth frets, so a half step directly under the index finger. That is E to F, the first of the two half steps, and it is down to the guitar’s tuning that it lands so awkwardly here.
Position 3: frets 7 to 10
Position 3 is the fullest one. Five of six strings carry three notes and only the B string carries two. The roots are back on both E strings at the eighth fret, with one more on the D string at the tenth.
The overlap with position 2 is wider than the one between positions 1 and 2. On the low E string, the A string and the high E string there are two shared notes; on the other three strings, one. For a seven-note scale that is the normal case. The clean break between positions 1 and 2 is the exception.
With these three positions the neck is covered from the second to the tenth fret. For anything above that, move position 1 up twelve frets, where it starts again at the fourteenth.
The whole neck
In the first twelve frets each string carries exactly one C, six in total: on the low E string at the eighth fret, on the A string at the third, on the D string at the tenth, on the G string at the fifth, on the B string at the first and on the high E string at the eighth again. Know those six places and you find the target note in any position without counting your way through the shape.
From the twelfth fret the same pattern starts over. The neck is not twice the material, it is the same material occurring twice.
The same shape in every key
The root of position 1 sits on the A string, and the box starts one fret below it. Put the root on the fret of the key you want and the shape holds unchanged.

For keys with accidentals, count one fret up or down from the nearest row. B flat major is one fret below B major, so its root is at the first fret of the A string.
Seven keys out of one shape. Here the effort spent on the major scale pays off, and here a guitar is ahead of a piano, on which every key has a fingering of its own.
What it is for: the chords of a key
So far the major scale has been a shape. Its real value lies elsewhere. Build a triad on each of its seven degrees, by taking every other note of the scale from that point, and you get the seven chords of the key. They are the reason songs in one key hang together.

Three observations make that table usable:
- Major sits on I, IV and V. Those three carry a substantial share of the pop, rock and blues repertoire. In C major they are C, F and G, and anyone who can play them can accompany a great many songs.
- The sixth degree is the relative minor. A minor in C major, which is why the famous four chords C, G, Am, F sound like major and minor at once.
- The seventh degree is diminished, which makes it the chord that turns up least often in songs. It is not an exception to the rule but a result of it, because no stable triad can be built on a leading tone.

How to practise it
The major scale gives little back as a finger exercise and a great deal as an ear exercise. The difference is whether you know which degree you are playing.
- Quarter notes at 60 bpm, up and down, position 1, until five clean runs stand back to back. Then eighths, then up in steps of 5 bpm.
- Count the degrees, not the notes. Say one, two, three up to seven as you play. That costs tempo at first and is the entire point of the exercise: the note that falls on “three” is the third in any key.
- Stop on each degree. Play the scale up and hold the last note, then again and hold the one before it. Doing that is how you hear which degree wants to go where. The fourth and the seventh are the restless ones; the first, third and fifth are the settled ones.
- In thirds, once plain up and down is secure: C-E, D-F, E-G and so on. Here a scale turns into melody, and it doubles as the groundwork for the chords in the table above.
From the second week, add the change from position 1 to position 2 over the shared column at the fifth fret. Up through position 1, change at the fifth fret, on through position 2 to the highest note, and back the same way.
Four mistakes
- Treating the scale as a finger exercise. Play it fast and you have practised a movement. Track the degrees and you have learned a frame of reference that lets you describe every other scale in one sentence.
- Staying in C major. The key you practise in should change after a fortnight, or the shape sticks to one fret. G major and D major are the ones that come up most in songs.
- Only ever starting from the bottom. The lowest note of position 1 is a G, not the C. If you always begin there, you never hear the scale from its own root.
- Missing the half steps. They are the difference between major and everything else. Know where E to F and B to C fall while you practise and you can derive any other scale from this one instead of learning it from scratch.
What comes next
The minor scale is the next step and it costs no new shape, being the same seven notes with a different root. Which one that is, and what changes about the sound, is in the scales overview. - The three major chords among them are degrees one, four and five. They carry a large share of the pop and rock repertoire.
- The shape moves: put the root of position 1 on the A string and the box starts one fret below it. C sits at the 3rd fret, G at the 10th.
