About
Music theory you can see
Memorising scale shapes is easy. Understanding why they work is hard – and that's exactly where we come in.

Co-Founder
Web developer with a guitarist's background – 20+ years in software development. Builds the technology behind Smart Fret, with a player's perspective baked in.
The problem
Theory is taught in tables, practice happens on the fretboard – two worlds that rarely meet. Online teaching adds distance: teacher and student stare at separate screens instead of the same thing.
What we believe
You learn faster when you see how things connect. Smart Fret makes scales, chords and modes visible on the interactive fretboard – in real time, together, in the browser. Memorising turns into understanding.
The idea
The idea came straight out of everyday teaching. Jean-Marc has taught guitar for over 18 years – increasingly online, where explaining theory, showing the fretboard and keeping an eye on the student's screen meant juggling three separate windows. Ernst, a developer and guitarist himself, knew the other side of it. So we built what was missing: an interactive fretboard that teacher and student see in real time, in the same browser – the tool we'd wished for in our own lessons.
Where we're headed
Shared live sessions, importable practice templates and a library that grows with every teacher – without didactics or control ever leaving the teacher's hands.
