How do scales, chords and modes connect?

Scales, chords and modes are not three topics but three views of the same seven notes. Every degree of a scale carries a triad, that triad becomes a seventh chord when you stack one more third on it, and the same degree gives you a mode as soon as you read the scale from there. The Key Theory Module in SMART FRET shows those three layers as nested rings: the note on the inside, the mode on the outside – and in between you can see that all of it comes out of one scale.

Which chords belong to a key?

The innermost ring shows the notes of the selected scale. In C major those are C, D, E, F, G, A and B. Which scales are worth learning in the first place, and in what order, is covered in the guide to scales on the guitar.

One ring further out, each of those notes carries a triad. It is built by counting onwards in thirds from that degree, using only notes from the scale. In C major that gives you:

  • C – Dm – Em – F – G – Am and a diminished triad on B

That D produces D minor rather than D major is the rule, not an exception: whether a degree comes out major, minor or diminished is decided purely by its spacing inside the scale. Which is exactly why seeing it as rings helps – you do not have to memorise the qualities, you can read them off.

What are seventh chords, and when do you need them?

One more ring out, and the triad becomes a seventh chord. Musically only one thing happens: another third goes on top of the triad. D minor becomes Dm7 – same root, same function, just more colour.

In C major these are Cmaj7, Dm7, Em7, Fmaj7, G7, Am7 and Bm7♭5. Anyone playing jazz, soul, bossa or more ambitious pop works almost entirely with these four-note chords rather than triads – and the degree carrying the dominant seventh (G7 here) is the one that pulls hardest back to the tonic.

What is a mode, and how do you see it in the circle?

The outermost ring gives every degree its mode. D becomes D Dorian. The important part: a mode is not a new scale. It is the same seven notes with a different note as the centre. C major read from D is D Dorian, read from E it is E Phrygian, and so on through all seven degrees:

  • Ionian, Dorian, Phrygian, Lydian, Mixolydian, Aeolian, Locrian

This is the point where modes click for a lot of players. They stay confusing for exactly as long as you learn them as seven additional scales to memorise. As rings around one key, they are seven views of something you already know.

Seven notes, seven chords, seven modes

So the whole structure rests on a single rule: pick a note and move outward. You get its triad, its seventh chord and its mode – all built from the same seven notes. Seven degrees give seven triads, which become seven seventh chords, which each have a mode.

Once you have seen that, you stop learning three separate chapters.

Major, harmonic minor, melodic minor and harmonic major

The key itself is changed on the outermost ring. Beyond that you can also switch the type of scale – and as you switch, the chords in the inner rings visibly change with it. That is the most instructive moment in the module, because you are not told about the relationship, you watch it happen:

Harmonic minor

Natural minor with a raised seventh. That single change turns the fifth degree into a major, and a dominant seventh, chord – and with it creates the strong pull back to the tonic that natural minor does not have.

Melodic minor

Raised sixth and seventh. Going up it sounds almost like major with a minor third, and it is the basis of a large part of jazz harmony.

Harmonic major

Major with a lowered sixth. Rarer, but the quickest route to the darker shading you know from film scores.

Hearing the chord, not just seeing it

Down in the lower right there is a play button. It loops the selected chord as a background so you can play straight over it. That turns the visualisation into an exercise: pick a mode on the outer ring, loop the chord, improvise over it – at the moment you have just understood the relationship, rather than two weeks later.

In short

  • A scale has seven degrees – and therefore seven triads, seven seventh chords and seven modes.
  • Triad, seventh chord and mode are not three topics but three views of the same degree.
  • A seventh chord is a triad with one more third on top – same root, richer harmony.
  • A mode is not a new scale; it is the same scale read from a different degree.
  • Switching to harmonic minor, melodic minor or harmonic major visibly changes the chords with it.

Let's start with the Key Theory Module.

The inner gold ring here shows all the notes of your selected scale — right now C major, so C, D, E, F, G, A, B. Take D, for example — that's just one note in the scale. Now move out one ring, and you get the chord built on that scale degree. So D becomes D minor — the triad built from that note. Move out another ring, and it becomes the full 7th chord. D minor turns into D minor 7 — same root, just richer harmony. And the outermost ring gives you the mode built on that same note. D becomes D Dorian — one scale, viewed from that degree.

So that's the whole structure: pick a note, and moving outward you get its triad, its 7th chord, and its mode — all built from the same seven notes. This gives us 7 triads, which are essentially 7 7th chords, which also each have their own mode — so 7 modes as well.

So these are the chords and modes you get built from a major scale — but it doesn't stop at major. Up here I can switch the scale itself: harmonic minor, melodic minor, harmonic major.
