How do you learn the fretboard systematically?

You do not learn the fretboard by collecting shapes. You learn it by finding one order that everything else files into. That is exactly what the CAGED system does: it breaks the neck into five positions derived from the open chord shapes C, A, G, E and D – and arpeggios, pentatonics and modes later live in those same five positions. The Fretboard Module in SMART FRET shows every one of those layers in the same place, with notation and tab running along with it.

Guitar, bass or piano – and why you never enter anything twice

First you pick your instrument. The more important part is what you do not have to do: whatever is selected in the Key Theory Module or the Chord Progression Module shows up here automatically. No second entry, no copying across by hand.

That sounds like a convenience, but it is the reason theory and fretboard meet at all: work out a key in one tool and then rebuild it in another, and the connection is exactly what gets lost in between.

Why “show every note” is useless for practising

Take an F major chord. In All View you can see every note of that chord across the entire neck. It is impressive and practically worthless – far too much information to practise with.

The value comes from narrowing it down. Not “where does this note appear everywhere” but “where does it sit in this position” is the question that turns into playing.

What is the CAGED system?

CAGED comes from the five open chord shapes C, A, G, E and D. Each major shape can be moved up the neck, and together the five cover the whole neck with no gaps – so any chord is playable in five positions, always by the same logic.

In the module you step through those positions one CAGED shape at a time. Instead of one picture containing every note, you get five manageable views that add up to the same thing. You can also mute individual notes, draw on the fretboard, and play the chord back to hear it rather than only see it.

Shell voicings, triads and spread voicings

Shell voicings

Stripped back to the notes that carry the harmony. Small, mobile, and the standard solution in jazz and accompaniment, because they leave room for other instruments.

Triads

Three-note chords in a close position, usually on three adjacent strings. The fastest route to clear chord colours without holding a full grip.

Spread voicings

The same notes pulled far apart. Sounds more open, and is why a chord on a record often feels “bigger” than the one under your own fingers.

How do a chord and its arpeggio connect?

This is the moment it clicks. Switch from the chord to the arpeggio and you see it at once: same shape, same logic. An arpeggio is not another diagram to learn on top of the chord – it is the chord you are already holding, played one note at a time.

Which is why switching back and forth here does more than any explanation: you see the relationship instead of taking it on trust. Drawing and muting work on the arpeggio too, so you can lift out specific fragments.

Pentatonics and modes – same positions, different sound

The same holds for pentatonics and modes: switch over, same positions, same system, different material. Once you understand the five positions, no further scale starts from zero again – which is the actual return a system gives you over a collection of shapes.

Practice settings: direction, note values, metronome

For practising you can set which direction things play – up, down or up-down – and in which note values, eighth notes or triplets among them.

The coupling is what matters: those settings are tied to the metronome. That turns looking at a shape into practising it in time. Running a position at your own speed feels like progress; playing it as triplets at 80 bpm shows whether it is actually there.

Notation and tab, updating live

Everything happening on the fretboard is available at the same time as standard notation and as tab – and both update as you move through the positions. For anyone who wants to learn to read music, that is the least effortful route there is: you always see both side by side without setting aside a separate exercise for it.

In short

  • Showing every note at once is useless for practising – the value comes from narrowing it down.

Now let's move over to the Fretboard Module.

First you pick your instrument — Guitar, Bass, or Piano. I'll stick with guitar for this one. Whatever I select in the Key Theory Module, and in the Chord Progression Module, which I'll show you in another video, automatically shows up here on the fretboard. No re-entering anything.

Let's take an F major chord as an example. Right now I'm in All View, so you can see literally every note of the F major chord across the whole neck. But that's too much information to actually practice with.

So let's limit it. I'll switch over to CAGED. Quick reminder if you don't know the system: it comes from the five open chord shapes — C, A, G, E, and D. Now watch — I can move through every single position of this chord across the neck, one CAGED shape at a time.

And that's not all. I can mute individual notes, I can draw on the fretboard, and I can just hit play and actually hear the chord.

I also want to quickly show you shell voicings, triads, and spread voicings — always the same chord but different textures.

Next, arpeggios. This is where it really clicks — I switch over, and you can instantly see how the arpeggio and the chord are directly connected, same shape, same logic. Let me switch back and forth between the chord and the arpeggio so you can really see that relationship. And yes, same deal here, you can draw and mute notes on the arpeggio too.

Same thing works for pentatonic scales and modes — switch over, same positions, same logic, just a different sound to work with.

Now let's talk practice settings. You've got playback direction — up, down, up-down — and you can change the note values, eighth notes, triplets, whatever you need. These settings are always connected with your metronome, so you can actually practice these shapes in time.

And last but not least — notation and tabs. Everything you just saw on the fretboard is also available as standard notation and as tab, updating live as you move through positions.

But sometimes I don't just want to practice the shape as it is — I want to build my own sequence out of it. And that's possible too, with SEQ Mode. I'll get into that a bit later, once we've covered the Chord Progression Module, since the two connect.
