How do you build a chord progression and practise it on the fretboard?

Writing a chord progression down is one thing. Preparing it so you can actually practise it – a specific voicing per chord, in a specific position, in time – is another, and it is where most practice plans fall apart. In the Chord Progression Module in SMART FRET the progression and the fretboard are permanently coupled: every chord in the sequence remembers how you want to see it on the neck, and the whole sequence runs through at the press of a button.
How do you build a progression?
You pick the chords in the module and set the key there too – the same key logic as in the Key Theory Module. Each chord appears as a chord chip in the sequence.
The connection to the fretboard is live the whole time: whichever chip you select opens straight away on the neck. That is where you decide what you want to see for that chord – the chord itself, its arpeggio, its pentatonic or its mode.
Do you have to stay inside the diatonic chords?
No, and that matters more than it sounds. You can add any chord you like and mix chords from any degree of any scale in the same progression.
This is exactly where a lot of theory tools give up: they only permit what is “allowed” inside one key – which rules out most of what makes popular music interesting, from the borrowed subdominant to the secondary dominant. Anyone rebuilding a real song needs that freedom.
What a chord chip remembers
This is the point where a progression turns into an exercise: every chip saves the exact selection you made on the fretboard – voicing, position, view.
That lets you build a complete practice session chord by chord, exactly the way you intend to play it. Not “the progression is G – Em – C – D”, but: G as a shell voicing in third position, Em as an arpeggio, C in the CAGED A shape, D as Mixolydian. Each chip holds its own answer.
What does the Link button do?
The coupling between module and fretboard is always on. The Link button is something else: it couples playback.
With Link active you no longer step from chord to chord by hand – you hit play and the progression runs. As it runs, the fretboard follows and shows exactly what is stored on each chip.
The example from the video makes the point: practise every diatonic mode, one after another, always starting from the A string. Set it up once per chip, hit Link, hit play, and the exercise runs itself. Without that coupling it would be seven separate exercises clicked through by hand.
Editing several chords in two clicks
Multi-editing copies one chord’s settings onto every selected chord at once. Practising a specific mode in a specific shape across the whole progression is two clicks away instead of a pass through every chip.
The same mechanic comes back in Sequence Mode – there, for note sequences you draw yourself.
Transposing a progression
One click and the whole progression shifts to a new key. For singers that is the everyday case; for practising it is the fastest way to know a figure in more than one key.
Not only practice: songwriting
The module is explicitly a writing tool as well. Build progressions, hear them back immediately, try different voicings in passing – the difference from a notes app is that you hear the result while you build it instead of imagining it.

Alright, let's talk about the Chord Progression Module.
The FM and the CPM are always connected — whichever chord I select here in the CPM, it opens up on the fretboard, and now I can set that chord to whatever I want. I want to play its mode, or its pentatonic, or just the chord itself — I just set that up after adding a chord chip.
Let's build a quick progression. I can select chords directly here in the CPM, and I can also set the key right here, same as we saw in the Key Theory Module. And you're not locked into the diatonic chords of one key either — you can add any chord you like, and mix and match chords from any degree, of any scale, in the same progression.
Here's something really important — every chord chip actually saves the exact selection you made on the fretboard. So if you set up a specific voicing, position, or view on the FM, that chord chip remembers it. That means you can build out a complete practice session, chord by chord, exactly the way you want to practice it.
Now, separate from that always-on connection, there's a Link button. This is what links the playback — so instead of just jumping from chord to chord manually, I can hit play and it runs through the whole progression for me. And as it plays, the fretboard automatically updates to show whatever I saved on each chip as it comes up. So say I want to practice every diatonic mode, one after another, always starting from the A string — I set that up once per chip, hit Link, hit play, and it just runs through the whole thing for me.
Now, one of the strongest features here is multi-editing. Multi-editing lets me copy the settings of one chord onto every selected chord at once. So say you want to practice a specific mode in one particular shape across your whole progression — two clicks, and you're done.
I also want to show you the transpose function — one click, and the whole progression instantly shifts to a new key.
This whole module is also a great tool for songwriting — building out progressions, hearing them back, trying different voicings on the fly, it's not just for practicing existing material.
